Earlier this year I received an email from a good friend of mine Spencer who announced that he was getting married and wanted to celebrate with a select group of friends out in West Texas on some land he owned in Terlingua. So In April, I hopped in a 4 seat Cessna with someone whom I have never met and 3.5 hours later we were there.

Now about the title of this entry. The star trail image above was something I’ve wanted to do for a while and I knew this trip would provide the opportunity, landscape, lack of light pollution and all the things necessary to make it happen. I set up on a tripod and using my Planets app along with the Compass app, I picked a spot in the southern sky, hooked up my shutter remote and proceeded to let the camera take back to back 30 second exposures until the battery ran out. And that’s exactly what happened 474 images later.

When I woke up the next day, I hopped out of the shipping container and grabbed my camera, put in a new battery and started to jog though all the images. It was perfect. I knew I would have some post work ahead of me but was very pleased at what I was seeing.

The rest of the group was also waking up at this point and we all got together to discuss our contributions to a time capsule dedicated to our weekend out there. My contribution was to be individual portraits of our group and toss the CF card into the time capsule. I had a separate card dedicated for this specific reason but I also wanted to have the images to share with the group so I was switching back and forth between my two cards. We gathered together making our individual offerings to the capsule and decided to head out for breakfast before hitting the road home. On the way to breakfast I pulled my camera out to take another spin through the images from the night before and I was overcome with a sinking feeling in my stomach, the images were gone. The card got accidentally formatted during the portrait session earlier with all the back and forth between cards. I immediately took my dilemma to Spencer who is also a photographer and a brilliant filmmaker who said he would take the card and run it through a robust data recovery software he had back home. Well, it worked.

Storm's A Comin'

Eight months ago I walked into Austin Kickboxing Academy, not sure what to expect, but eager to find out what this place was all about. Forty-five minutes later, fueled by endorphins, adrenaline and soaked in sweat, I noticed fairly decent-sized knot had formed on my right shin from repeated roundhouse kicks to the heavy bag. "Take an Epsom salt bath when you get home, you'll be fine," a woman's voice said; the same voice that had been instructing me on my 1's, 2's and 3's throughout the session.

It wasn't until weeks later (yes, I kept going back) that I learned this voice belonged to Tessa "The Typhoon" Simpson.

Fast forward to mid-July 2016, where I find myself during an extended lunch break documenting her training session in preparation for her July 29th Atomweight bout against Simona Soukupova at Invicta FC 18.

It was an honor and a privilege to be behind the lens for this one and trust me when I say I'm glad I wasn't opposite her during this training session!  Best of luck Coach Tessa!!!

Lastest Music Project with Carrie and the Cut Snakes "Wild".

I love every opportunity I get to work with Austin Musicians.  Be it live, in the studio or on location; or in this case to be asked do all 3 and put it together, creating the EP artwork  for an amazing group of musicians.  Carrie, Shaun, Jared and Patrick...

My latest project with Carrie and the Cut Snakes was an unforgettable one.

I want to thank each one of you for the opportunity to work together.

And a special mention to Carrie whose 1 year task it was to come to Austin, Tx all the way from Australia, get a band together and record an EP before heading back to Oz.  What an amazing journey for you and I was proud to get to be a part of it!

The EP "Wild" can be found at Waterloo Records, Antone's and Encore around town in Austin

You can also go to carrieandthecutsnakes.com for the digital download.

So with out further ado..

Analog Trip.

So I hooked up with Mike Propst to continue the visual branding of his new musical project.

Various Reasons is a one-man band whose music evokes a Gary Numan-esque style along with other 80' synth-pop talent.

About the concept:  I've been collecting cassette tapes for a while wanting to somehow work them into a shoot.  When Mike approached me about his musical vision and wanting to create something visually to go along with his new sound,  I was intrigued.  I sat down immediately and drew up a few comps for him and that's when the concept came to me.  When I showed him the comp, and explained my intentions,  'to shoot with lots of contrast to give it some punch,' we agreed on the idea and set out to make it a reality.

About Mike's vision:  "The thing with analog synthesizers, at the time, there really wasn't a chance for people to explore what they could do, digital synths and samplers came around in the mid-80's and people just kind of ditched their old, clunky, weird synths with out exploring everything they could do, so... bringing that kind of thing back to a semi-pop... I'm also trying to do something that people will actually want to come see and dance to it as well."

Dunn Day, The Final Chapter.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when moving forward brings about tough decisions. Moving to Houston was one of these decisions for our close friends, Ryan and Tiana.

We have had the absolute pleasure of getting to know and becoming good friends with this couple and they have been such an important part of mine and Brit’s lives over the past year.  We love them dearly.

And of course, leave it to them to throw one of the best parties of the year to bid them adieu. Our entire group of friends gathered for a final “Dunn Day” in their backyard on May 24, 2014.

Music, smiles, dogs, babies, tears, beers and impressive pig roast….

While they will only be few hours away, we will miss these two dearly. This backyard holds plenty of memories… They’re such a great model of what good friends should be.

"We hate that you’re moving but we love that you're moving to Houston.”

Peace, love and best wishes...

Cautiontape hits the studio With Robert Harrison for their for thier first EP!

Cautiontape in the studio With Robert Harrison for their first EP!

I tagged along with Cautiontape last weekend as they trekked to the hill country to record their first EP.

If the name sounds familiar, it should.  Robert, frontman of Cotton Mather and Future Clouds and Radar, has worked with the likes of Nicole Atkins and toured with Oasis and others.  You can learn more about his musical endeavors by visiting www.starapplekingdom.com

Cautiontape stepped foot for the first time in-studio as a band, where Robert acted as producer and recording engineer. They will return in the near future to put the finishing touches on the EP.

SX... #WHATEVER. Day 1

So every SXSW I go about the same plan.. I dont make any; other than heading out to meet up with friends and what ever happens happens. This year was no different with the exception that I opted for 2 wheels rather than 4 on this particular day. Not wanting to deal with the hassle of traffic, parking, paying to park blah, blah, blah and given the previous nights event in downtown Austin, I just felt more comfortable on my bike. So I parked at work (I had the day off) and began my adventure. Stop one, The lost Well - 2421 Webberville Rd. Miles biked: 2.4 Friends: Jason, Marc And Mo(+1) :) Music: Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery. Quotes: "I thought for sure they were gonna play Cannonball" - Mo(+1) "There just aren't enough bands using the word motherfucker these days, we just need more songs with the word motherfucker" - Jason (while listening to a band screaming motherfucker... a lot.) "Now this isn't a pot holder folks" - Kelley Deal [gallery type="rectangular" ids="628,629,630,631,632"]

From left to right: Paul, Debbie, Marc, Mo(+1), Drew, Paula and I forget her name but she was reluctant to get in the shot
From left to right: Paul, Debbie, Marc, Mo(+1), Drew, Paula and I forget her name but she was reluctant to get in the shot

Stop two, Shangri la - 1016 E 6th St Miles biked: 1.2 Friends: Marc, Mo(+1), Paul, Debbie, Paula and Drew Music: nothing remarkable... sorry kids Quotes: "This guy sounds like Dave Mathews but with better hair" - Marc

Final destination, Cusp on Rainey - 78 Rainey St. Miles biked: .8 miles Friends: Ryan, Tiana, Bonsai, Nikki and Jonathan Music: Meg Myers (heard her while I stood in line), Oh Honey and Night Terrors of 1927 Quotes: "Night Terrors play next here! I will get pics!" - Kyle "Fml, I seriously want to cry" - Brit

Enjoy the rest of your SXSW and please be careful!

Until next time, Kyle

The Music Project featuring Scott Adair

The third installment of this project features singer/songwriter and friend Scott Adair.  We decided to do the shoot at his place because it's where he creates his music and being a former resident of the complex, I knew that the light from both the north and south windows is excellent to work with. I've got to say that this project has really been a great experience. I get my own private concert in an intimate setting and really enjoy getting to sit and talk and lean more about the people I'm working with; and perhaps have a beer or two in the process ;).

Thank you Scott for your hospitality, CD and the bottle of Bulleit...

I've included a few extra images here that I really enjoy and I hope you do as well.

The Music Project featuring Evil Youth

For those of you who follow me, you may remember I first introduced this project with an image last year featuring Dan Raza.  If you haven't seen it yet... http://skykingphotography.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/the-music-project-featuring-dan-raza/... there it is.   I have continued on with this in hopes to put together an eclectic group of musical creatives, combining  an image from a shoot with them and the lyrics to one of their songs that represents them the most. The second installment of this project features Evil Youth, a female fronted electronic collaboration with sisters Brit and Steph Kagan for their song La Mer.  To learn more about these ladies' work, including pics, songs and music videos, check them out at http://evilyouthband.tumblr.com/!

Dan Raza, 'Drifting' in the '04

Brit: "When Dan visits, he walks around Austin with his guitar and just plays." Me: "Wait, he doesn't even get a cab?"

Brit: "No. He just walks. It's his thing."

From the moment Brit and I had this conversation, I knew I had to capture this with my camera.

Dan Raza is a singer/songwriter from the UK. He is quiet and modest, with honest eyes and a voice that can make any music lover stop and listen. I was introduced to him last year by my girlfriend and her family. A longtime Texas music fan, Raza has made arrangements to come across the pond to visit several times in the past year.

After shooting a live gig at a local Austin coffee shop, we made plans to bring this idea to fruition. We took a walk down South Congress one evening, and this is what came of it.

Be sure to check out his music in the links below, you won't be disappointed.

Cheers.
